The match was played in very good spirits with few penalties and a lot of running. While the scrums were fairly evenly matched the Colchester backs could not keep up with the speedy backs of Essex. In the first half Essex had 4 long breakaway tries and another 5 in the second half. Colchester managed a try in each half. Both followed numerous phases principally by the forwards.
